2026 Salmon Release

POTTER PARK ZOO - RED CEDAR RIVER

POTTER PARK ZOO HOSTS MICHIGAN’S LARGEST SALMON RELEASE

They Came by the Hundreds. In Fact, 400 or More!
Congratulations to Potter Park Zoo on your huge success with your second annual Salmon Release. Hundreds of elementary, middle school, and high school students came from across Michigan to participate in this annual state-wide initiative where students raise salmon from eggs to fingerlings for spring release.

A DNR specialist at the event reported that this Potter Park Zoo same-day event was Michigan’s largest. While the main event was the salmon release, there were special events and exhibits to heighten awareness of our collective responsibility as stewards of our waterways. The event also included a tour of Potter Park Zoo for all the students.

We, Michigan Waterways Stewards, were honored to be asked to return and again feature our “Race to Clean Up The River.”

This event was created to promote our collective responsibility to steward our waterways for the benefit of fish and wildlife. During this event, students were paired up to see who could most quickly clean up litter from the river (wading pool) to provide cleaner, healthier waterways.
A special shout-out is due to event organizer Rebecca Morningstar, Animal Science Instructor, and Potter Park Zoo for being a fantastic host, and to all the volunteers who made this event so great. It is difficult to imagine a better setting for such a grand event. Everyone had a great time, and the weather cooperated, with the rain stoppingjust before the event and holding off until just after.
LOVE OUR WATERWAYS. IT’S A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY.
CREATING A COMMUNITY CULTURE OF CARE.
