KARING FOR THE KZOO26—THE SPRING EVENT

Another Record-Setting, High-Impact, Community-Wide, Stewardship Event.

On this Saturday, March 28, 2026, despite the brisk early spring temperatures, over two hundred dedicated volunteers gathered to clean and beautify Kalamazoo’s treasured riverside parks, the Kalamazoo Valley River Trail, and the Kalamazoo River. As a delightful surprise, the sun emerged to warm our spirits, creating a perfect backdrop for our volunteer efforts.

Our primary focus was to remove litter and trash, as well as eradicate invasive flora along the 1.2-mile stretch from Mayors’ Riverfront to Verburg Park. We directed our efforts particularly at the northern stretch of Mayors’ Riverfront and throughout the area adjacent to Red Arrow Golf Course. After our initial clean-up, we revisited small patches along Mayors’ Riverfront to eradicate invasive flora attempting to reestablish themselves.

The removal of these invasive plants is vital, as they can outcompete native flora for essential resources, leading to a decline in biodiversity. This decline negatively affects the entire ecosystem, pushing out small animals, birds, and pollinators that depend on native plants for food and habitat. Moreover, invasive plants disrupt natural river processes, which can increase erosion and alter water flow, ultimately impacting water quality.

In addition to invasive plant removal, our volunteers diligently picked up litter and debris over a 4.2-mile stretch from Comstock to Parchment
The most significant improvements were seen along the Kalamazoo Valley River Trail, where hundreds of cubic yards of invasive flora were removed and hundreds of pounds of litter cleared, gifting Kalamazoo residents and visitors a much cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful experience.

Furthermore, the work accomplished this Saturday paves the way for future efforts to reforest the area and enhance its natural biodiversity, encouraging the return of small animals, birds, and pollinators. Perhaps even more importantly, these beautification efforts will inspire greater volunteer engagement and foster a stronger connection to the outdoors and the greater Kalamazoo community.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each volunteer, those families, partner organizations, and the City of Kalamazoo and BKC CISMA. The driving force behind this spring campaign was Western Michigan University’s Interfraternity Council, with dedicated volunteers from Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Kappa Sigma, and Phi Gamma Delta, as well as other WMU groups including Eta Eta Sigma, Lee Honors College, and Panhellenic.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION
The Kalamazoo Growlers Thank You!

We wish to give special thanks to the Kalamazoo Growlers for returning as our event hospitality partner. They provided a hearty lunch and graciously opened their baseball stadium for our volunteers.

In appreciation of our volunteers' remarkable efforts, the Growlers also gifted each volunteer with a FREE admission pass to the Thursday evening home game on May 28th against the Lakeshore Chinooks.
