Red Cedar Railroad Bridge

NOVEMBER 29, 2022 CLEAN UP

Be A River Angel!

On the Red Cedar River, under the last railroad bridge before the confluence of the Grand River, is an obstruction of trees, limbs, and natural debris blocking passage under four of the five bridge's spans. Caught behind it is a large pool of surface pollution consisting of bottles, plastics, objects made from styrofoam, and larger pieces including highway markers and construction materials.

After the Red Cedar River Bridge, downriver and before the confluence of the Grand River, is a large assortment of urban debris partially submerged in the river bottom and  its framing riverbanks.

Join us, on Tuesday, November 29, as we begin to transform this unsightly and largely impassable section of river into a stretch deserving of the Red Cedar and introduction of urban paddling in our state's capitol city.

Join Us!

Tuesday, November 29, we are organizing a Red Cedar River Clean Up, focusing on the area beginning at the Red Cedar Railroad Bridge, one-tenth mile east of S. Cedar Street, to the confluence of the Grand River.
The area of greatest focus will be on the:
  1. Removal of entanglement of trees, limbs, and other natural debris blocking passage through four of the five railroad spans.
  2. Collection of all surface pollutants pooled up behind the entanglement and those that will be released as the entanglement is removed.
  3. Other urban debris found in the water, or on the riverbanks.

The removal of the entanglement will be solely managed by Adrian and Blissfield Railroad Company (ADBF). They will be bringing in their heavy equipment. For safety reasons, please do not paddle near the bridge while ADBF is working and do not walk on the tracks above to watch their work.

We are responsible for all other river clean-up work.
In advance of Tuesday’s work beginning, we will visit the Red Cedar Railroad Bridge to remove those surface pollutants pooled up behind the entanglement. On the day off, we will catch those pollutants caught below the surface as they're released. There will be other urban debris in the area to collect and remove. So much, it will require a return visit at another time.
ADBF is expected to begin work at 9AM. This project will be much easier than our recent work at the Grand River Railroad Bridge (click here). If we arrive in the area of the bridge around 12:20 PM, we should be in good position to collect those pollutants as they are released. We just don’t know how much there will be. Regardless, there is considerably more to collect in the area.
If your schedule does not allow for a midday paddle, but you could assist earlier or later the same day, please let us know. We certainly welcome your help. Drop me a note via our Contact Us page, email mstout@i3-marketing.com, or call (952) 239-3943.

Because this is an all-volunteer, on-river, clean-up event, only skilled paddlers are to participate. Canoes and Jon boats are preferred. Dress warmly and wearing a PFD is required. Trash pickers, heavy ml garbage bags, an extendable net,  some rope, will be provided. Please bring anything to assist.
