Keep A Lid On It!

Michigan Waterways Stewards  KEEP A LID ON IT! campaign evolved from the observations and learnings gained from a 21-mile Red Cedar River assessment.

It was a windy day and beginning at the railroad bridge crossing in west Okemos to Bogue Street on MSU's campus, the Red Cedar River and its riverbanks were covered in litter and other urban debris. I noticed the top of  'every' visible commercial dumpster was left open, making it easy for the wind to lift up and carry away any unbagged, lightweight litter.

Please understand, not all of the litter seen on our Red Cedar River's riverbanks and in the water was from open dumpsters. Adjoining the stretch of river is business, industry, and high density living, as well as East Grand River Drive. This area is largely paved and any loose debris is likely to be blown, or washed, toward our Red Cedar River.
Nevertheless, our KEEP A LID ON IT! campaign is intended to simply act as friendly reminder for area business, industry, and residents to keep the lid on their large commercial dumpsters. This will prevent any lightweight, loose litter from blowing away and polluting our open space, riverbanks, and waterways.

Windy Day Tips from Granger Waste Services.

To help keep your yard and community clean on windy days, please follow these easy-to-follow three tips.
BAG ALL TRASH | DON'T OVERFILL | NO PLASTIC BAGS IN RECYCLING

TIP #1 BAG ALL TRASH
•  Loose trash in your cart will easily blow out if the lid gets lifted.
•  Bagged trash is less likely to blow out of the cart on a windy day and when it is being emptied.
•  Bagging your trash also means loose trash will not stick to the bottom of your cart when it is emptied.

TIP #2 DON'T OVERFILL
•  Overfilling trash and recycling carts means cart lids don't close all the way.
•  To help ensure lids stay closed and aren't easily lifted by a strong gust of wind, try to put only those items in your cart that fit.

TIP #3 NO PLASTIC BAGS IN RECYCLING
•  Grocery bags can be recycled at your local grocery store. They can easily blow in the wind if the lid on your cart opens and they are not considered a curbside recycling item.

BONUS TIP
•  Place heavier bags in your trash cart on top of lighter bags.
